 Top 5 Security Tips

Our home is a safe space for ourselves and our families, our refuge from the outside world and the place we keep all those things that are precious to us. However due to the recent rise in burglaries and car thefts, it's easy to feel a little less safe in our homes. However, not to fear! There are several simple, cost effective (and not so cost effective) ways to keep your home safe from prowlers and car thieves, and today I'm going to share them with you. Here are my top 5 home security tips from your friendly neighborhood locksmith.

Lights

Well positioned, security lighting is a fantastic way to deter burglars from attempting a break in. Burglars are always on the lookout for poorly lit drives and doorways to work in so they don't raise the alarm with your neighbors. Also, if you or your loved ones are arriving home late after a night on the town, a well lit driveway will make them feel much safer as they enter the property. If your security lights are broken or you don't have any to begin with, get it sorted!

Gates
This may seem an obvious one but as a locksmith I find that a lot of side gates are in a state of disrepair or, if they are functional, don't lock. Making life difficult for burglars, anyway you can, could make them think twice about an attempted break in.

Alarms

Most modern homes come with an alarm system, but so many of us forget to set them or put off repairing them if they break. A loud and disruptive alarm that activates at your points of entry or even around the perimeter of your home will really limit the amount of time a burglar has to get away with your belongings, or stop them in their tracks altogether.

Locks

By far the most common form of break in currently, is lock snapping. Car thieves are on the look out for standard lock cylinders. Using a large pair of Mole Grips they will snap off the door handle from the outside and then grasp the exposed lock. With just a few small movements the lock will snap in two, and once removed the door mechanism can be unlocked. In order to combat this we install anti snapping locks. Strongly reinforced in the center, these locks cannot be snapped. Some even have sacrificial ends that will break away when tampered with. These locks, stop lock snapping full stop. I cant recommend them highly enough.

Handles

As mentioned above, part of the lock snapping process involves first, forcefully removing the handle, which is why I put high security handles here on my list. High security handles are a thick, solid steel set of handles that completely cover your lock leaving space for only a key. Bolted from the inside with large gauge screws, the handles cannot be removed with mole grips alone, noisy, messy power tools would need to be employed. The handles also look very impressive and are a clear visual message to burglars to not even try it.
